There were many things we’d like to forget about 2020. For starters, the COVID-19 pandemic that has and will continue to devastate people and businesses alike. Thankfully, we were mostly unscathed here at Dakil Auctioneers, Inc., which meant it was a busy year both online and socially distanced in our spacious in-house gallery.
You never know what you’ll find at an auction, which is why we like to compile an annual list of our favorite and most memorable events. You can also take a look at our recap of the most interesting items auctioned off in 2020.
This local establishment was a Norman favorite for both their hotel and restaurant. But, above all else, they were known for their connection to the Oklahoma Sooners. Unfortunately, the pandemic, along with construction along I-35, led to their closing.
This was a true liquidation in the sense that everything was available to bid on, from the building to all the contents inside, such as sports memorabilia. Attendees had the opportunity to bid on entire hotel rooms or bathrooms, which included air conditioning units and beds.
The real estate part of the auction went for $2.5 million, and everything inside sold in what was a highly-attended event. The most popular item turned out to be a six-door barbecue smoker previously used for the restaurant.
This massive three-day auction had everything from outdoor furniture and gas grills to life-size statues of bulls and cows. Oh, and there was a giant dinosaur, too.
The sheer magnitude of this auction not only made it interesting but also our highest trafficked online auction of 2020. There were thousands of items to bid on, including decor, pots, park benches, fireplaces, and about 100-plus different fireside table and chair sets.
We’re proud to help with benefit auctions in the Oklahoma City metro area, and this event with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes was no different. The FCA’s auction is typically held in person, but the event moved online due to COVID-19.
The item receiving the most interest was a 12-gauge Remington Versa Max shotgun autographed by Duck Dynasty star Willie Robertson. The auction also featured practical items such as a queen bedroom set from Ashley Furniture and experiences such as tickets to the Senior PGA Championship in Tulsa.
This benefit auction was another in-person-turned-online event due to COVID-19. As the name suggests, most of the items were sports memorabilia or sports-related experiences. For example, one high bidder received 16 tickets to the owner’s suite for a future Oklahoma City Thunder game. Another bidder won Kansas basketball coach Bill Self’s personal tickets for a home game at Kansas.
For non-sports fans, there was George Strait autographed guitar and a weekend getaway in the Texas hill country.
Estate auctions are known for finding rare and interesting items. This one happened to have a Gent’s Presidential Rolex watch from 1978 that sold for almost $10,000.
But, firearms were the main attraction here. The auction featured over 100 different guns. One of the more interesting guns turned out to be a Browning Auto-5 Magnum manufactured in Belgium in 1970. It also featured a U.S. Military sniper rifle from 1997.
This auction was one of the first we conducted after a brief time off during the pandemic. Auctions with collector items are always fun, which made this event so interesting.
For starters, we auctioned off a 1981 Corvette Stingray with buckskin interior as well as a 1980 Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC. These old school cars drew a crowd from attendees that day. We also had several antique guns, including anniversary editions, along with Rolex watches and gold coins.
Sports collectors had their choice of notable professional and college sports memorabilia from the likes of the Oklahoma Sooners, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Dallas Cowboys.
We hold heavy equipment auctions four times a year, and they are always some of our most enjoyable events. This year provided a wide selection of vehicles and machinery to choose from as many businesses, unfortunately, had to sell equipment during the pandemic. On the buying side, demand for cars and trucks grew as manufacturers slowed production due to COVID-19 restrictions.
During our winter heavy equipment auction last December, a Bobcat sold for nearly $30,000. Throughout the year, we had many travel trailers, excavators, and boats auctioned off as well.
